Way back when, the skies were crowded. Full of things that flapped and floundered. Some had scales and some had horns. Some were large and some were small. Back then, when the world was new, penguins did not swim but flew. They soared on thermal winds that blew. Just like other birds they knew. Long ago they had no beaks; looked less like birds and more like sheeps. Accept their wings were made of feathers, not wool. So in fact, they didn't look like sheep at all. Perhaps they looked more like flying dogs; with four short legs and bristly backs. No, not dogs; cats? No, that's wrong too... Hedgehogs! That's what I mean, long and thin and yellowy-green. Hedgehogs, that's it. With slimy skin and wide smiling grins, eyes on their heads; amphibians. Frogs! Frogs are what I meant not, dogs, not cats, not hedgehogs. Frogs. They flew in the sky like great soaring frogs, with great flapping ears and long winding trunks. Grey leathery skin... oh wait, no not frogs. Elephants! Six spindly legs, a thorax, an abdomen, antennae on their heads... Elephants? I'm a fool. They didn't look like elephants at all, but ants. Huge black flying ants. Not sheep, not dogs, or cats, not hedgehogs, not frogs or elephants, ants! They looked like ants. Well, anyway... Before they learned how to swim, penguins tried on all these things, each and every single guise. But in the end, they took a dive. Fled to the sea from the sky. I guess that's it. I guess that's why. Why penguins don't fly..?
